What is MicroTESE

When a male is unable to reproduce due to non-obstructive azoospermia that is not having enough sperm containing ample amount of semen, he is recommended to undergo surgical sperm retrieval procedures in order to reproduce. Sperm is surgically retrieved in cases where a couple is suffering with male factor infertility. Such techniques are followed by ICSI / IVF.
Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction (microTESE) is one such technique whereby sperm is retrieved from a male’s testes. Usually, men with non-obstructive azoospermia undergo MicroTESE because sperm production, in such cases, is low and restricted to seminiferous tubules. MicroTESE procedure is an efficient procedure to retrieve sperm in case of non-obstructive azoospermia because it uses microscopic and microsurgical techniques to target rare areas to detect sperm.

MicroTESE Procedure

In order to perform microTESE procedure, the patient is put under general anesthesia before commencing with the surgery. It is followed by making a small incision in the middle of scrotum and a high power microscope is used to detect seminiferous tubules which may contain sperm. A tissue sample is obtained from the tubules and the procedure is repeated on the other testicle. The tissue samples are examined by a specialist under a microscope to check whether they contain any sperm. If sperm is detected, it can be used for ICSI / IVF.

Side Effects of MicroTESE

MicroTESE is a usually a safe procedure but the possible side effects of microTESE include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Pain
  • Discomfort

The side effects fade away with time. Besides, the usage of medicines as recommended by the doctor also help in dealing with microTESE side effects.

MicroTESE vs TESE

Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction (MicroTESE) is advanced type of Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE). However, TESE cannot be opted for men with non-obstructive azoospermia because it is unable to sample rare areas that are producing sperm. It is carried out without magnification but in microTESE, microsurgical technique is resorted to identify seminiferous tubules which might contain sperm. It is to be noted that, TESE and MicroTESE are equally successful depending upon the underlying condition of the patient.

MicroTESE Success Rate

Numerous studies have shown that microTESE has the highest success rate of sperm retrieval. Also, it causes least damage to the testes. It is now considered as gold treatment for patients diagnosed with non-obstructive azoospermia. The success rate of microTESE is upto 60%. Even if it fails, the surgery can be repeated with a gap of six to twelve months.
