Preimplantation genetic testing, or PGT, is a type of genetic testing that offers significant benefits. It allows embryologists to test embryos for the presence of any genetic hereditary disease, separating the affected embryos from normal ones. IVF doctors then use these normal and healthy embryos for embryo transfer and pregnancy. This test is a game-changer, helping to prescreen embryos and ensuring a healthy pregnancy. The definition of preimplantation genetic testing is to test embryos before implantation. PGT-A is a type of PGT that detects chromosomal aneuploidies. An aneuploidy means the presence of an extra chromosome or the absence of a chromosome in an embryo. The average chromosome number in a human embryo or normal human cell is 46. Any change to this number can cause a disease known as aneuploidy. For example, Down Syndrome is a widespread disease where people face delayed milestones, mental retardations, and multiple other aspects. An extra copy of chromosome 21 in Down Syndrome causes all these symptoms.
PGT-SR is a type of PGT that detects structural arrangements in chromosomes. There is a situation when one or a group of genes in a chromosome can change their position. It may result in a carrier state or diseased persons. A carrier state is when a person himself does not manifest symptoms of a disease but can transfer the tendency of that disease to the next generation. The diseases related to this group include malformations of the part of the body, neuropathies (brain developmental diseases), and many other conditions.
Preimplantation genetic testing IVF has better success rates than simple IVF. The success rate of regular IVF without PGT is up to 40 percent, a maximum below the age of 35. PGT testing increases this rate to more than 60 percent below 35. It is because PGT separates healthy and genetically sound embryos for transfer, which have maximum chances for implantation and minimum chances of miscarriages.
The number of PGT attempts can vary from patient to patient, depending on the clinical practices of an IVF center and the patient’s reasons for going for PGT.
The cost of PGT depends on different factors, such as the facility providing it, the number of attempts, the type of PGT, the prescreening of patients, and the location of the IVF clinic.
